This Renault Twingo currently offered in Germany is one of three factory prototypes created by Renault to celebrate the original Twingo’s 30th anniversary. Known as the Twingo Y2K, it was built by Renault’s design team alongside the Gangsta Crew and Top Model concepts, each using a first-generation Twingo to interpret a different aspect of 1990s culture.
Y2K was inspired by the era’s boy-band and tuning culture. Renault gave the 1995 Twingo a two-tone blue and silver pearlescent finish, extending the paint treatment to trim pieces and other details normally left as exposed plastic. Inside, those plastic surfaces were instead covered in light blue Nappa leather with contrasting stitching, resulting in a substantially more elaborate cabin than that of a production Twingo.
The prototype is also fully electric. Renault fitted an available retrofit conversion using a 22-kW (30-hp) electric motor, with the seller quoting a range of approximately 80 to 100 kilometers, or 50 to 62 miles. The conversion was part of Renault’s anniversary exercise and anticipated the company’s return to the idea of an electric Twingo.
According to Garage Blanc, it acquired the actual Renault factory prototype rather than recreating the anniversary car. The Twingo has covered just 100 kilometers, primarily through appearances and roll-outs associated with the anniversary project, and is described as remaining in essentially new condition. It has one previous owner and carries a January 1995 first-registration date.
There is one significant limitation. Although the electric conversion uses production-based components and the car is fully operational, Renault never pursued normal road approval for the prototype. Garage Blanc therefore positions it primarily as a collector car, noting that it can be driven in Germany using appropriate temporary or trade registration.
The Twingo Y2K is offered in Gelsenkirchen for €19,890. For that price, the buyer isn’t simply getting an unusually modified early Twingo, but a one-off Renault Design factory prototype built as part of the company’s own celebration of one of its most recognizable modern designs.
