Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 Brings Formula 1 Tech to the Track Day Elite

Mercedes-AMG has never been shy about blurring the lines between its road cars, GT racers, and Formula 1 machinery. But with the newly unveiled GT2 Edition W16, that overlap gets distilled into something truly wild: a track-only customer car that’s every bit as exclusive as it is outrageous. Just 30 examples will be built, each hand-finished and tied visually and technically to the Mercedes-AMG F1 W16 E PERFORMANCE car.

The numbers tell the first half of the story. At its core is the familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, massaged with new turbos and reprogrammed electronics to unleash up to 818 horsepower when the new Push2Pass system is engaged. That means a quick tap on the steering wheel delivers an instant 98-hp shot of adrenaline, raising torque to a staggering 738 lb-ft. Factor in the lightweight construction and a 3.85 lb/hp power-to-weight ratio, and you’re looking at a machine that borders on prototype-level performance. Top speed? More than 199 mph, helped by a Formula 1-style Drag Reduction System (DRS) that flattens the rear wing on command.

But performance is only part of the appeal. The Edition W16 looks every bit the motorsport statement piece it is. A hand-painted star motif sweeps across its flanks, while PETRONAS emerald accents link it unmistakably to the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team. Magnesium wheels, carbon aero elements, and a cockpit trimmed in matte carbon with PETRONAS highlights make sure there’s no mistaking its pedigree. Adding to the allure, every car’s door sills carry the signature of Mercedes junior driver Kimi Antonelli, who serves as patron of the project and has already sampled the car on track.

As with any true collector’s piece, the delivery is just as special as the car. Each owner will take delivery at a private European racetrack event, with seat time, engineering briefings, and a meet-and-greet with members of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team. Buyers also receive edition-specific racing gear from OMP and BELL, ensuring they’re as properly kitted as the machine itself.

At €679,000 (before VAT), the GT2 Edition W16 isn’t for everyone—but then again, that’s the point. It’s AMG’s most extreme track day toy yet: part GT racer, part Formula 1 tech showcase, and 100 percent collector bait. For those lucky enough to snag one of the 30, this is AMG Motorsport’s world—delivered in raw, unfiltered form.
