Another Monterey Car Week auction superstar we’ve found is part of Broad Arrow’s sale at the Monterey Jet Center. The car is the final Mercedes-Benz SLR Roadster ever produced, retained by McLaren Special Operations (MSO) for testing and development. There, it also served as a bed for testing and development for bespoke upgrades that could then be ordered on existing SLRs. One such test included an upgraded charge cooler and ducting that would eventually make its way into the yet-to-be-introduced SLR Stirling Moss.

This SLR prototype specimen known as “Stealth” is the only example to be finished in McLaren Orange. That’s paired with Black Semi-Analine Leather and Alcantara seats.

The car was shown at the 2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed from July 3-5, 2009, where it was driven by F1 star Lewis Hamilton, Pedro de la Rosa and SLR Program director Paul Mackenzie. Following Goodwood, the car returned to McLaren for complete service including new brake rotors, pads and calipers on all four corners, in addition to replacing the front brake cooling ducts, brake fluid and differential oil.

It remained in the McLaren Automotive Heritage Collection until 2015 when it was sold to a private owner who imported it into the United States utilizing the Show and Display rule. The car includes an accompanying document from the EPA showing that the car met EPA emission standards in 2015, certification performed by J.K. Technologies of Baltimore, MD. Importation documents and a letter from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirming its entry request utilizing Show and Display being granted are also included.

The chance for a do-over is oftentimes appealing, whether it be something in your personal or professional live. But the opportunity is one that simply doesn’t exist in most situations, so for those select few, if you get the shot you best take it. McLaren Special Operations offered those with a car and cash the chance to do just that in 2022, inviting SLR McLaren Benzes back to Woking for some additional love.

Mercedes made big news at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show when it revealed the 300 SL Roadster as a replacement for the iconic 300 SL Coupe also known as the “Gullwing”. Additional chassis reinforcement took weight up, though further improvements such as a fully synchronized gearbox, improved engine (dropping direct injection), rear axle design assured the newer and heavier Roadster remained one of the fastest accelerating cars available in those years.
