Rare 911 R Gathering Highlights Tennessee-Based Porsche Plática

A collection of nearly 40 Porsche 911 R models gathered in East Tennessee this month as Porsche Plática 2026 brought together one of the largest assemblies of the celebrated lightweight sports car in recent memory.

Held at The Quarry Venue near Knoxville, the enthusiast-driven event featured more than 30 examples of the 991-generation 911 R. Introduced in 2016 and limited to 991 units worldwide, the model was created as a modern tribute to the original 911 R. Joining them were five examples of the original 1966-1967 911 R, representing a significant portion of the approximately 20 cars produced during the model’s brief initial run.

Set against the backdrop of a limestone quarry, the gathering showcased a wide range of specifications and individual stories behind the cars. Beyond the headline 911 R display, attendees also brought an assortment of notable Porsche models spanning multiple generations. Paint-to-sample 997-generation 911 GT3 RS models highlighted the possibilities available through Porsche’s personalization programs, while historic competition machinery including the 917, 962 and 962C underscored the brand’s motorsport heritage.

The event emphasized driving as much as display. Participants explored some of the region’s most celebrated roads, including the Tail of the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway, while additional track sessions were held at the nearby Flatrock Motorclub. The 3.5-mile circuit provided owners with an opportunity to experience both modern and historic Porsche models in a performance setting.

Porsche Cars North America President and CEO Timo Resch attended portions of the gathering, reflecting the manufacturer’s continued support of enthusiast-led events. Porsche Plática was founded by Shannon Harper as a community-focused event centered on driving and owner engagement.

Now in its third year, Porsche Plática has quickly established itself as a notable date on the enthusiast calendar, demonstrating the continued appeal of grassroots gatherings that celebrate both the cars and the community surrounding them. Organizers have already confirmed the next edition for May 2, 2027.
