Every so often a car appears that combines two already desirable collector stories into a single package. This 1992 RUF BTR 3.8 offered through RM Sotheby’s does exactly that, beginning life as one of Porsche’s most focused 964-generation Carrera RS variants before receiving a period conversion by RUF Automobile.

The foundation alone is noteworthy. This car started life as a Carrera RS N/GT, one of just 290 examples produced. Built on June 12, 1992 and delivered new in Germany through Porsche Zentrum Darmstadt, it was specified in Maritime Blue and ordered with the coveted M003 Club Sport package.

That option transformed the already lightweight Carrera RS into something even more focused. The package added a welded roll cage, Recaro bucket seats with Schroth harnesses, thinner glass, lightweight wiring, simplified door panels, an extended-range fuel tank and an interior battery cut-off switch. The result was a road car developed directly from Porsche’s Carrera Cup racing program.

For most collectors, that specification would be enough.

However, in 1999 the car was sent to RUF Automobile in Pfaffenhausen for a comprehensive BTR 3.8 conversion. Documentation accompanying the car confirms the work, which reportedly cost more than 106,000 Deutsche Marks at the time.

The transformation went well beyond a simple power increase. RUF replaced the naturally aspirated drivetrain with a turbocharged Type M64/50 engine enlarged to 3.8 liters and rated at 415 PS. Power is delivered through a six-speed RUF manual gearbox, while the conversion also included RUF-specific instrumentation, suspension, braking components, an additional oil cooler, dual-mass flywheel, OZ Racing wheels, distinctive exhaust outlets and the model’s signature Turbo-style rear wing.

The result is a car that occupies a fascinating space between Porsche and RUF. It retains the lightweight, competition-focused character of the Carrera RS N/GT while adding the performance and exclusivity of one of RUF’s most respected road-going models.

Perhaps most impressive is the mileage. At the time of the conversion, the original odometer showed 25,902 kilometers before being replaced and reset as part of the RUF work. Today the replacement odometer displays just 6,222 kilometers, suggesting a total lifetime distance of approximately 32,000 kilometers. More remarkably, the car reportedly spent nearly 25 years in storage following its conversion, seeing only limited use.

Recognizing the need to recommission the car properly, the current owner returned it to RUF in December 2025 for a comprehensive mechanical refresh. The nearly €30,000 invoice included a major engine service, brake overhaul, replacement Bilstein suspension, new tires and a replacement windshield, ensuring the car is ready for its next chapter rather than merely presented as a static collector piece.

Finished in its original Maritime Blue over black interior, the car arrives at auction with an estimate of $420,000 to $550,000. While that places it firmly among serious collector machinery, the specification arguably justifies the figure. Genuine RUF-converted cars have become increasingly sought after, while air-cooled Carrera RS models continue to rank among the most coveted modern-era Porsches.

Finding either is difficult. Finding both in the same car is considerably rarer.

For enthusiasts who appreciate the intersection of Porsche Motorsport’s lightweight philosophy and RUF’s engineering vision, this BTR 3.8 may represent one of the most interesting air-cooled offerings to cross the auction block this year.
