When Audi launched the GT version of the first-generation R8, it represented the ultimate evolution of the naturally aspirated V10 supercar. Lighter, more powerful, and significantly rarer than the standard model, the R8 GT was built in limited numbers for collectors who wanted the closest thing to a road-going GT race car. Today, one of the rarest examples offered in the United States has appeared on Bring a Trailer.

This 2012 Audi R8 GT Spyder is number 156 of just 333 examples produced worldwide, and one of only 50 officially delivered to the U.S. market. Finished in striking Suzuka Gray Matte over a black leather interior with a black soft top, it shows just 13,000 miles from new.
The GT wasn’t merely an appearance package. Audi engineers removed weight wherever possible, replacing numerous exterior components with carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) including the front splitter, rear diffuser, fixed rear wing, dive planes, mirror caps, windshield surround, and engine lid vents. The windshield itself was also lighter than the standard R8’s, contributing to the GT’s weight-saving program.

Unlike the standard R8, which offered Audi Magnetic Ride adaptive dampers, the GT adopted a manually adjustable coilover suspension for a more focused driving experience. Stopping power comes from standard carbon-ceramic brakes, while lightweight 19-inch Y-design wheels wear Pirelli P Zero tires.
Inside, Audi balanced motorsport intent with luxury. Heated power-adjustable leather seats feature embroidered R8 GT logos, while carbon fiber trim, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, Bang & Olufsen audio system, Audi Navigation Plus, automatic climate control, and a wind deflector ensure the car remains comfortable enough for grand touring.

A numbered plaque on the shift lever confirms this example’s place in the production run.
Power comes from Audi’s legendary 5.2-liter naturally aspirated FSI V10, producing 560 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque in GT specification. The engine sends power to all four wheels through the familiar six-speed R tronic automated manual transmission and quattro all-wheel drive.
While opinions remain divided on the single-clutch R tronic gearbox compared with today’s dual-clutch transmissions, it has become part of the GT’s character, delivering a driving experience that feels increasingly analog in today’s electrified and highly automated supercar landscape.

According to the listing, the current owner acquired the Spyder in 2021 and added approximately 1,000 miles. The sale includes a clean Carfax report showing no accidents or damage, two keys, a battery tender, and the original car cover. The only noted cosmetic issue is minor scraping underneath the front carbon-fiber splitter, a common occurrence on low-slung performance cars.
As Audi’s naturally aspirated V10 era continues to recede into history, limited-production models like the R8 GT have become increasingly sought after. With only 50 examples officially imported into the United States, the GT Spyder remains one of the most exclusive open-top Audis ever offered here and one of the most collectible variants of the first-generation R8.
