Every so often an Audi exclusive car resurfaces where simply identifying the specification becomes part of the car’s back story. This 2019 RS 5 Sportback currently offered by Sewell Audi McKinney is one of those cars, finished in a shade Audi documentation identifies as Carolina blue uni variante (01-2017-1076-1).
The Carolina Blue name naturally brings the University of North Carolina to mind. Pair it with Alaska Blue stitching and it is difficult not to suspect that whoever ordered this one had the Tar Heels very much on his or her mind.
The build went beyond special paint. The original window sticker confirms a $3,900 Audi exclusive color option along with $8,150 in Audi exclusive tailoring in Black with Alaska Blue stitching, giving the interior a color treatment designed specifically to complement the exterior.
The rest of the specification was similarly ambitious. A Black Optic Carbon Package added $5,500, while the Dynamic Package brought RS sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control, RS sport exhaust and red brake calipers. Fine Nappa leather, dynamic steering, Bang & Olufsen audio, black Audi rings and other options pushed the car from a $74,200 base price to an original MSRP of $100,345.
What makes the car even more interesting is how little period documentation appears to remain online. The only contemporary reference we have been able to find is a May 2019 post in the Audi Club North America Facebook group describing a “1/1 Carolina blue RS5 SB” with an Audi exclusive Alaska Blue stitched interior. Given how unusual that exact exterior and interior combination is, we suspect it is the same car, though we have not found documentation tying that post directly to this VIN.
In the comments, someone familiar with the original order said the color was a special one-off developed with the head of Audi exclusive, adding that the dealership’s general manager worked with him on the colors for weeks before the final specification was approved. If that recollection does refer to this car, then somebody clearly took their Carolina allegiance seriously.
Seven years later, the RS 5 has resurfaced with 67,320 miles and an asking price of $44,711. The VIN matches the original $100,345 window sticker, while the current dealer listing still identifies the exterior as Carolina Blue.
For an RS 5 Sportback that could otherwise disappear into the used market, Carolina Blue makes this one difficult to mistake for anything else. Add the Alaska Blue stitching, six-figure original sticker and apparent one-off history, and this is exactly the sort of Audi exclusive specification worth documenting when it comes back into circulation.
