The Porsche 996 is coming back around as a desirable classic. And while that’s becoming incredibly obvious, also obvious is the fact that the 996-generation 911 Turbo never really lost its luster. Less obviously known is the fact that more of these cars age into “classic” status for easy importation by the day, unlocking availability of cars built for the European market that in period was a much greater consumer of highly unique factory specifications.

Finished in factory Speed Yellow and currently offered by a Paris-based specialist, this 2001 Turbo embraces that philosophy with one particularly distinctive detail: its factory Turbo Twist wheels have been painted to match the bodywork, creating a monochromatic look not often seen on the 996 generation. The result is a specification that feels unmistakably early-2000s Porsche while standing apart from the sea of silver, black and Arctic Silver Turbos that typically dominate the market.

The inside is Graphite Grey with aluminum package – a darker grey that works well with Speed Yellow though was relatively common in period. Less common in period was the additional leather surfaces that helped make the more plastic 996-era interior feel like more of the higher-dollar experience you probably expect in purchasing a 911.

Mechanically, the 996 Turbo remains one of the great performance bargains of the modern era. Its 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six traces its lineage to Porsche’s GT1 Le Mans program rather than the M96 engine found in naturally aspirated Carreras, producing 420 horsepower and sending power to all four wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. Even by current standards, a sub-4.5-second sprint to 60 mph and a top speed approaching 190 mph remain impressive credentials.

While Speed Yellow has long been associated with Porsche’s most extroverted models, relatively few buyers specified it on the 996 Turbo. Coupled with the matching-painted Turbo Twist wheels, Graphite Grey interior and aluminum trim, this example captures an era when Porsche customers weren’t afraid to order something bold. Now that it has crossed the 25-year threshold, it offers American buyers an opportunity to acquire a distinctive European-market 996 Turbo without waiting another day.
